Walton: Half-acre of Naze vanishes

From the archive, first published Friday 19th Jan 2001.

Save the Naze campaigners have expressed renewed concern following a further major slippage of cliff.

Hundreds of tons of cliff have come away - complete with its grass topping.

Tendring Council has had to create a new path along the cliff because of the danger, and put up fencing.

The latest slippage represents the loss of a further half acre of the famous cliffs.

The Naze Tower can now be seen from the beach at the base of the cliffs.

There were several less dramatic slippages before Christmas following heavy rain.

And the historic 80 ft high Naze Tower, which is less than 100 metres from the cliff edge, can now be seen from the foot of the cliffs whereas previously it was hidden.

Campaigners were infuriated after district councillors decided last year to instigate a research programme into current erosion schemes which cost them the chance of putting in a bid for £1.3 million lottery cash.

Tendring Council has said it wants to know the results of the extensive survey before taking a decision.

Chairman of Naze Protection Society, David Gager, said today: "It is unlikely the further research will provide the absolute assurance the council want and, therefore, they will never do anything to save the Naze.

"It is of grave concern to the public that this negative approach is unnecessarily losing beautiful and irreplaceable public open space."
