Clacton: On a roll for new skatepark

From the archive, first published Monday 18th Nov 2002.

About 100 skaters and pushchairs rolled themselves along a seafront to raise money for a planned skateboard park.

Residents used anything with wheels to go from the Martello Inn in Clacton to the sailing club at Holland Haven.

They were all sponsored and money raised will go towards a proposed new skatepark at Clacton Leisure Centre.

Gill Elkins, of the Clacton Crime Prevention Panel, said a skatepark account had been set up.

It was hoped the fun roll on Saturday afternoon would raise up to £600.

The youngest participant was 18 months old while the oldest was past retirement age.

More fundraising is planned for January when a quiz night will be held at The Tavern in Holland-on-Sea.

On Sunday, the leisure centre had a free mobile skatepark on its multi-courts for youngsters to try out their skills. Tendring Council and the crime prevention panel organised the events.
