Walton: Cliff charity auctions antique doll over internet

From the archive, first published Wednesday 5th Oct 2005.

Going, going ...click! Volunteers at Walton's Save the Naze shop are more used to delving back millions of years giving their expert advice about fossils.

But now the fundraisers have been using the modern technology of an internet auction to boost the coffers.

Sharp-eyed helpers Pat Coptcoat and Edna Benton spotted an antique doll at the bottom of a black sack.

They decided to put the doll, a Gebruder Heubach Bisque pre-1920s piano doll, up for auction and it went under the hammer for £50 when it was sold on the international web auction house E-Bay

Jan Dunning, manager of the shop, run by the Naze Protection Society, said: "It really is amazing what can be found at the bottom of a humble black sack.

"We are always grateful for donations from members of the public - especially so when items of this calibre turn up."

The shop in the High Street is the charity's main source of income in the bid to help save Walton crumbling Naze cliffs. Last year, it raised £20,000 to boost reserves.
